What is a hair spa?

Think of it as a spa treatment where the scalp gets the massage instead of the back. At Riviera the Signature Hair Spa covers hair cleansing, a nourishing treatment, a relaxing scalp massage and a professional blow-dry, all inside 60 minutes, and you leave with your hair washed and dried.

Heat and sunscreen for a few days, and sea salt if you've come up from the coast, can leave hair feeling dry and heavy.

Is a hair spa the same as a creambath?

They're related. Creambath is the Indonesian salon treatment where a thick cream is worked into the hair and scalp through a long massage and then rinsed out, and a lot of salons in Bali offer it.

Riviera's menu calls its treatment a hair spa, and describes cleansing, a nourishing treatment and a scalp massage rather than a creambath. The spa uses natural hair and body care products. Ask us which ones go into your treatment and we'll tell you.

Which hair treatment should you book at Riviera?

The Signature Hair Spa is the 60 minute one above, at IDR 390,000. Hair Spa Deluxe runs 90 minutes at IDR 550,000, with a deeper treatment, a longer scalp massage and a nourishing mask, then blow-dry and styling. If you only want your hair done, the Wash, Blow Dry and Styling takes 45 minutes at IDR 220,000 with no treatment attached.

With a dinner booked the same night, the Deluxe is the one that finishes with styling, not just a blow-dry. For a wedding or a big night out, the 45 minute Simple Pedicure sits on the same menu, with nail shaping, cuticle care, a foot soak, a light foot massage and OPI polish.

Prices on the menu are before tax. An 11% service charge and 10% government tax get added when you pay.

Can you combine a hair spa with a massage?

Yes, the spa sells three packages built that way. Relax and Glow pairs a 60 minute Balinese massage with the Signature Hair Spa at IDR 690,000. Riviera Escape is a 90 minute aromatherapy massage plus the Hair Spa Deluxe, IDR 990,000. The longest, the Ultimate Riviera Ritual, adds a blow-dry and styling to a 90 minute deep tissue massage and the Hair Spa Deluxe, at IDR 1,150,000.

Smaller add-ons too: a 15 minute scalp massage or face massage at IDR 90,000 each, a hot stone upgrade at IDR 120,000, and the aromatherapy oil upgrade costs nothing. A package stacks a massage and a hair treatment, so leave room in the day for both.

Where is Riviera Spa in Ubud?

The spa is inside Riviera Boutique Hotel on Jalan Raya Pengosekan, and treatments are given at Riviera, not at a separate address. Pengosekan is the stretch south of the Sacred Monkey Forest known for its painters and galleries, and the Agung Rai Museum of Art is on the same road. From there the Ubud Art Market and Ubud Palace are a short walk or scooter ride north, and a hair spa after lunch still leaves the morning free for the museum.
