Ubud Guide

What to Do in Ubud When It Rains

Ubud's wet season runs from about November to March, and rain tends to fall in heavy afternoon bursts. Use the clearer mornings for walks and outdoor sights, then move indoors: an art museum, a spa treatment, a lounge for reading, or dinner. Riviera Boutique Hotel keeps a spa, a lounge and Kumo in one building on Jalan Raya Pengosekan.

Ubud has a dry season from about April to October and a wet season from about November to March. In the wet months rain usually comes as a heavy afternoon burst rather than a steady all-day drizzle, so the morning is often the best window for the Campuhan Ridge Walk, a temple or the other outdoor sights around Ubud.

Paths on the ridge and around the rice terraces can get slippery after a downpour, and road trips take longer in heavy rain. Put the outdoor stops first and keep an indoor plan close by for the afternoon.

Ubud's art museums are the obvious choice. Puri Lukisan in the town centre focuses on traditional and modern Balinese painting and wood carving. The Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) is on Jalan Raya Pengosekan and also hosts dance and music performances. The Neka Art Museum is on Jalan Raya Sanggingan at Campuhan, on the north-western side of town.

Opening times and ticket prices change, so check each museum before you go. Our guide to Ubud's museums and galleries covers what each collection holds.

A treatment room is a comfortable place to wait out a downpour. Riviera Spa, inside the hotel, offers traditional Balinese, deep-tissue and aromatherapy massage, foot reflexology and foot care, and a hair spa.

Book ahead if you want a set time, and see the spa page for the current treatments before you choose.

Riviera Lounge is open to hotel guests and visitors, with seating for reading, quiet work or conversation. It is an easy place to spend an hour while a shower passes. See the lounge page for details before you drop in.

Rain often eases by evening, and an indoor dinner keeps the plan simple either way. Kumo Fusion Omakase serves dinner inside Riviera, with a four-seat chef's counter for omakase and tables for its steak-house menu. Hotel guests can walk to dinner in the same building.

Visitors should reserve and check the days Kumo opens on the Kumo page before heading out in the rain.

  • A beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Ubud with stylish interiors and great attention to detail. I stayed in a Garden View room, which was very comfortable, spotless and peaceful. The staff were incredibly warm, attentive and helpful. I originally booked two nights but loved it so much that I extended my stay by another three. I would definitely return!

  • A Beautiful modern hotel in the heart of Ubud, very centrally and conveniently located and close to the best shops and restaurants. The hotel has a very beautiful colonial atmosphere, the rooms are clean, modern and stylish. The staff is kind and responsive. It's a great place for a couple or single travellers, it's not really fit for families as it has no infrastructure and special spaces for kids. It's a great place for adult travellers wanting to stay in the very heart of Ubud and enjoy the walking distance to the evening events in Ubud or just visiting the town without the need to use a car or a bike. We will be back!
