Museums and Art Galleries in Ubud

Ubud's main art museums include the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) on Jalan Raya Pengosekan, Puri Lukisan in the town centre and the Neka Art Museum at Campuhan. Between them they cover Balinese painting from classical Kamasan work to contemporary pieces. Smaller galleries line Jalan Raya Pengosekan, the road Riviera Boutique Hotel is on.

ARMA was founded by Agung Rai and opened in June 1996. Its collection runs from classical Kamasan painting and Batuan artists to works by Raden Saleh and Walter Spies, alongside contemporary Balinese, Indonesian and foreign artists.

It also works as a centre for the performing arts, with dance and music performances, painting classes and cultural workshops. Check the museum's own schedule for what is on during your stay.

Puri Lukisan grew out of the Pita Maha artists' cooperative, founded in 1936 by Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati with the painters Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies. The museum itself opened in the 1950s. Its collection covers traditional and modern Balinese painting and wood carving from the 1930s onward, across the Sanur, Batuan, Ubud, Young Artist and Keliki schools.

It sits in the centre of Ubud, so it pairs easily with Ubud Palace and the Art Market on the same morning.

The Neka Art Museum was set up by the Balinese art dealer Suteja Neka and opened officially in 1982, as the first privately owned museum in Bali. Its paintings and sculptures cover the main schools of Balinese painting, with works by Affandi, I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, Arie Smit and Rudolf Bonnet, and it keeps a large collection of kris, the traditional Balinese dagger.

The museum is on Jalan Raya Sanggingan at Campuhan, on the north-western side of town, so it fits a morning on the Campuhan Ridge Walk before the heat.

Smaller galleries are spread through town, and Jalan Raya Pengosekan is one of the streets known for them. The neighbourhood grew up as a painters' community, and galleries still line the road.

Ubud also has the Blanco Renaissance Museum, named after the painter Antonio Blanco, who lived in Ubud from 1952 until his death in 1999, and Museum Rudana in nearby Peliatan. Opening times and entry fees change, so check before you set out.

A central base keeps the main museums a short ride away, and anyone staying on Jalan Raya Pengosekan has ARMA on the same road. Riviera Boutique Hotel is there, with a spa, a lounge and Kumo in the building for the hours between gallery visits.

Riviera's six room pages cover Cocoon, Urban View and Garden View rooms, so compare the room views before you book.

  • A beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Ubud with stylish interiors and great attention to detail. I stayed in a Garden View room, which was very comfortable, spotless and peaceful. The staff were incredibly warm, attentive and helpful. I originally booked two nights but loved it so much that I extended my stay by another three. I would definitely return!

  • A Beautiful modern hotel in the heart of Ubud, very centrally and conveniently located and close to the best shops and restaurants. The hotel has a very beautiful colonial atmosphere, the rooms are clean, modern and stylish. The staff is kind and responsive. It's a great place for a couple or single travellers, it's not really fit for families as it has no infrastructure and special spaces for kids. It's a great place for adult travellers wanting to stay in the very heart of Ubud and enjoy the walking distance to the evening events in Ubud or just visiting the town without the need to use a car or a bike. We will be back!
