What Cocoon 1 is, and who it suits
Cocoon 1 is an interior room. It has no exterior windows and no balcony, so the light in it is the light you switch on. That makes it a dark room to sleep in, which suits guests landing off a night flight or resting between a morning walk through Ubud and a late dinner.
The wall behind the bed is white molded panelling, floor to ceiling, with a clear glass and brass pendant hanging on each side of the bed in place of table lamps. The headboard is upholstered in soft tan.
A walnut wardrobe with open shelving runs along one wall beside a single armchair, and a ceiling fan turns above the bed alongside the air conditioning. The bathroom sits behind an arched opening closed by a dark timber lattice door, with a rounded pedestal basin and a rain shower.
Because there is no window to wake you, mornings in Cocoon 1 begin when you decide they do. Guests who choose this room tend to use it for sleep and quiet and spend their daylight out in the building or the town, so the room only has to stay dark and cool when they come back to it. That is the trade an interior room makes: no morning sun and no street light, and no road noise once the door is shut, in exchange for the view the balcony rooms keep.

A beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Ubud with stylish interiors and great attention to detail. I stayed in a Garden View room, which was very comfortable, spotless and peaceful. The staff were incredibly warm, attentive and helpful. I originally booked two nights but loved it so much that I extended my stay by another three. I would definitely return!
A Beautiful modern hotel in the heart of Ubud, very centrally and conveniently located and close to the best shops and restaurants. The hotel has a very beautiful colonial atmosphere, the rooms are clean, modern and stylish. The staff is kind and responsive. It's a great place for a couple or single travellers, it's not really fit for families as it has no infrastructure and special spaces for kids. It's a great place for adult travellers wanting to stay in the very heart of Ubud and enjoy the walking distance to the evening events in Ubud or just visiting the town without the need to use a car or a bike. We will be back!

How are the bed and bathroom set up in Cocoon 1?
The bed is a king measuring 180 × 200 cm. Every Riviera room carries air conditioning, an in-room safe and daily housekeeping, and Cocoon 1 is set for two guests across its 23 m².
The bathroom has a rain shower and natural toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hand soap. In the room there is complimentary Wi-Fi, a tea and coffee station, a hair dryer and a minibar, which is charged separately. Filtered water is unlimited for the length of the stay from the refill station, and fresh drinking water is brought to the room each day.
Storage is the walnut wardrobe with open shelving along one wall, next to the single armchair that stands in for a desk. The ceiling fan runs above the bed with the air conditioning, so the air keeps moving without the room turning cold, and the brass and glass pendants on either side of the bed give enough light to read by without a hard overhead glare. In a room with no daylight of its own, that layered lighting is what keeps Cocoon 1 reading as a boutique room rather than a windowless box.
Cocoon 1 is one of 28 rooms at Riviera, and Riviera keeps its spa, its lounge and Kumo Fusion Omakase in the same building as the rooms. Most days here start in the lounge, which serves coffee and pastries by day and pours wine in the evening.
The spa books Balinese and deep-tissue massage, aromatherapy, foot care and hair treatments, and Kumo seats thirty guests a night, four of them at the omakase counter and the rest at the steak-house tables from five in the evening. None of it is more than a short walk inside the building.
Riviera's address is Jl Raya Pengosekan, in the Pengosekan part of Ubud, a stretch of town with a long history of painters and galleries. Ubud's main street runs up from here, and the cafes, shops, markets and the palace and temples that Ubud is known for sit in the town around us, a short walk from the door. For an interior room like Cocoon 1, that location does some of the work the window does not: the day happens outside, and the room is where it ends.
